About Word in Hand Press
Word in Hand Press is a woman-owned independent publishing press dedicated to the idea that books should be worth living with, not merely consumed.
I’m Carma, the woman in question. I have a long history working and playing with words, writing, and publications—as a freelance proofreader and copyeditor, a production editor in educational publishing, a communications director. Once I was done homeschooling my four children, I realized I had amassed a lot of writing over the years—a note here, an outline there, a couple of finished manuscripts tucked away. My professional publishing experience, my degrees in education and English, and the recent expansion of opportunity in publishing, led me to launch Word in Hand Press as an independent publisher in 2025.
From the time I began reading at age four, I was picky about the books I would read. As a mother of four, I became even more so. Many books gifted to my children mysteriously disappeared in our house after the first reading … and sometimes even before that. Good children’s literature is good literature, period. It shouldn’t be a penance to have to read, reread, and read again a child’s favorite book.
