Why Kickstarter?

In a nutshell, crowdfunding helps Word in Hand Press to bring our books into the world with the support of the people who want to see them published.

Kickstarter is an established crowdfunding platform and a great way to help people fund creative projects before they’re produced. As an independent micropress, Word in Hand is able to utilize crowdfunding to raise money for creative projects, gauge reader interest, determine financial viability of a print edition, and build an early community without taking on debt or giving up equity, all while launching our books on a larger scale than we could manage otherwise.

Instead of fronting the money for a project, a Kickstarter creator (that’s us) sets a funding goal and invites readers (that’s you) to pledge to support the project in exchange for rewards (that’s the book and other campaign goodies). Your pledges help fund production while giving us a better idea of how many books to print. And because you’re supporting the project early, you may receive first editions and Kickstarter-exclusive rewards that won’t be available elsewhere.

  • Prelaunch is when a campaign page is posted, but the campaign isn’t live yet. Follow the campaign to receive news and updates, such as reveal of new illustrations, reward announcements, and the launch date. A campaign may be in prelaunch for a few weeks or months while we build an audience.

  • Launch is when a campaign becomes active, and readers can pledge their support. When you pledge, Kickstarter will ask for your payment information, but nothing is charged until and unless the campaign reaches its funding goal.

  • The campaign runs for a set amount of time, usually 3–4 weeks, and has a specific funding goal. If the goal is reached by the deadline, the pledges are collected and we use the funds to produce and fulfill the rewards.

  • Kickstarter uses Stripe, a leading payment processor that meets stringent industry security standards, to handle all transactions.

  • After the campaign, we produce the books and other rewards, which are then sent to backers. Kickstarter campaigns have estimated delivery dates, so fulfillment may take some time after the campaign ends.

  • If the campaign doesn’t reach the goal, the project isn’t funded. No one is charged, and the campaign rewards aren’t produced.
